By the time communion got to us Baptists, drinking the actual blood of Christ had downshifted to drinking wine and then to the low gear of drinking Welch's Grape Juice. Eating the actual flesh of Christ had transformed to eating a nice communion wafer to our eating a dry morsel of crumb from a bread heel. We might sing of being washed in the blood but we weren't about to drink it nor wine either -- too many reformed alcoholics among us. We might eat hog and chicken and even rabbit and squirrel but drew the line on eating Jesus's body. And forget those fancy paper-thin wafers. We figured Jesus didn't have those things at the Last Supper. He had loaf bread.
"This shall be your food" The reference to the Old Testament "Instructions" about the Tree of Life, and the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Both trees representing the two figures Jesus and Satin. Being the "Bread of Life", Jesus was separating the two "Schools of thought"... ... Will mankind "Feast on the Bread of Life"? Or try to "Eat of that which perishes"? ....... Deep subject George... Thanks as always for the "Food of Thought" :)
ReplyDeleteHe had a loaf or bread- or He was the loaf of bread.I think He 'forgives me' for not doing that form of Holy Communion. If not, I am busted!
